AI on the Job! From Medicare to Housing Approvals, Australia’s Public Services Could Speed Up — Sydney Property Auction Clearance Rate at 76%

Week’s Key Focus

The federal government is driving a “streamlining campaign,” with agencies from Medicare and Centrelink to child support and unfair dismissal claims set to adopt artificial intelligence and automation to cut waste, combat fraud and speed up approvals. Services Australia said AI would help identify anomalies in data, process applications faster, and retain human oversight at critical stages. A trial automation system for JobSeeker payments has already saved more than 6500 staff hours annually.

The Treasury plans to allow more low-risk foreign investment applications to be handled directly by officials, ensuring decisions are made within 30 days. The Tax Office has launched a review of compliance costs, with reforms to trust reporting expected to save taxpayers about $20 million a year. Meanwhile, ASIC has streamlined almost 10,000 pages of regulation to make compliance easier for businesses and individuals.

The Fair Work Commission received more than 20,000 unfair dismissal claims last year, with many small and medium-sized businesses forced to rely on costly legal advisers due to a lack of HR departments. The commission is planning to develop a digital platform to help employees and employers resolve disputes more quickly, including online settlements, improving efficiency while reducing costs.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers stressed that the purpose of the reforms is not simply to cut for the sake of cutting, but to make the system more efficient and targeted, genuinely easing the burden on households and businesses. He said not all proposals would be adopted, but each would be carefully considered — especially those directly related to housing, jobs and essential services — to ensure people in Sydney and across the nation can access public services faster and with less hassle.
