Week’s Key Focus
Sydney’s rail network is set for another major adjustment. The T6 Bankstown–Lidcombe line will be closed from April 27 to June 29, affecting around 11,000 daily commuters, who will need to switch to free replacement buses or seek alternative routes. The closure is linked to the ongoing T3 line conversion project between Bankstown and Sydenham, which has been suspended since September last year, displacing up to 60,000 daily passengers onto buses.
The T6 closure will support platform extensions at Bankstown Station to accommodate eight-carriage trains, up from the current four-car sets, and will also include signalling upgrades. According to Transport for NSW, the works will boost the line’s future capacity and allow all Sydney Trains fleets to access Bankstown. While Yagoona, Birrong, and Bankstown stations will be closed, Berala and Regents Park passengers can still access the T3 Liverpool Line for travel to the CBD. During the closure, free express and all-stop bus services will operate between Bankstown and Lidcombe.
Additionally, the M1 Metro line will face partial or full weekend closures to facilitate testing for the Sydenham–Bankstown metro extension. Powering of the line has been completed, and trial runs are now being prepared. Sydney Metro has advised passengers to expect service interruptions, including early evening shutdowns on some days. “These disruptions are necessary to complete rigorous testing and ensure readiness for service,” the agency said.
The 13-kilometre section between Sydenham and Bankstown was originally scheduled to open late this year but has been delayed to 2025, with the launch date depending on test outcomes. The government has committed an additional $1.1 billion in late 2023, raising the total project budget for the Chatswood–Bankstown metro corridor to $21.6 billion, significantly higher than the initial $12 billion estimate. While the works may temporarily inconvenience commuters, the project is seen as vital for relieving congestion in Sydney’s southwest and improving long-term transport efficiency.
